Linde Sends Local Artists to International “Art Campus” in Moldova

It was “summer camp” for professionals.  From June 14 to 22, twenty-nine painters from four countries took part in SummArt, an annual symposium held this year in Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova.

Only two Americans were invited to SummArt this year and both are well-known local artists.   Sharon Cosgrove (left) is an Associate Professor of Art at Wilkes  and University with a studio in Wilkes-Barre, PA. Leigh Pawling (right) has a studio in Dallas, PA.

Sharon and Leigh with SummArt creator Mete Bora, who also founded the Summa Group, of which Linde International is a proud member. SummArt is an annual gathering of artists which has been sponsored since 2004 by Mr. Bora,  One bio of him says, “Mr. Bora is a collector of contemporary works of art who also enjoys supporting young talents by organizing international art campuses all over the world for them.”  His company recently won an Engineering News Record Global Best Project Award for building the SIPOPO Congress Center in Equatorial Guinea.

Not only did the artists sample Eastern European local culture, they immersed themselves in it, painting each day while standing next to each other in the middle of the crowded local shopping mall, Malldova.  Artists came from Moldova, Turkey, Romania, and the US.

Most artists work in solitude, but Sharon and Leigh each said the experience of working closely with international artists was exciting, inspiring and educational.

They also mentioned the delights and challenges of creating art in front of a constantly changing audience of curious Moldovan on-lookers, communicating across language barriers through the language of art and with kind gestures and smiles. That’s the goal of SummArt, to put painters of different cultures together in a small space with the openness to observe each other work, exchange ideas and learn from each other.

Linde Corporation helped to sponsor Sharon and Leigh.  Linde has been part of the Summa Group since 1997 and Linde President Scott Linde often refers to Mete Bora as a mentor.
